Largely due to Ukraine’s long political subordination and heavy borrowings from neighboring countries, the Ukrainian language shares a lot of similarities with other Slavic languages. At one point in history, it was indistinguishable from Belarusian and Russian and was almost not used in literature.
Today, Ukrainian is the native language of about 40 million people. And thanks to its development in literature and pop culture, as well as displays of solidarity, the number of Ukrainian speakers will likely continue to increase.
Whether you’ve always wanted to learn Ukrainian or only recently got interested in it, there’s really no better time to get started than now.
But how and where do you start? If you’re thinking of turning to well-known programs like Rosetta Stone, I hate to break it to you but a Rosetta Stone Ukrainian course doesn’t exist. There are plenty of apps and other resources for you though.
Let’s look at each one, shall we?
What is Rosetta Stone?
Rosetta Stone is a language learning software released in 1992 as CD-ROM versions for Windows and Macintosh. Now, it comes as a subscription product but its foundational immersion method is still at the program’s core.
I completely understand why you’d be interested in learning Ukrainian, or any language, through Rosetta Stone. Aside from its long history, it has set itself apart from other apps by using zero translations in its lessons.
Let’s say you want to learn Japanese through Rosetta Stone. You will be taking the entirety of the course in Japanese — no translations, no phonetic spellings, just 100% Japanese script and pronunciations. How’s that for immersion?
Of course, the app uses images and native speaker sounds to sort of guide you but you’ll mostly be learning through trial and error and context. Basically how you learned a language as a kid. While this can be a con for some, others find this challenging and helpful.
Rosetta Stone also has a superb voice recognition engine called TruAccent. This helps you fine-tune your pronunciation and accent.
The downside is that Rosetta Stone is only available in 25 languages. Unfortunately, the list does not include Ukrainian. However, there are excellent Ukrainian learning apps that can help you master the language.
The best Rosetta Stone alternatives
There are Rosetta Stone alternatives that showcase various methods and types of exercises for Ukrainian learners. For me, these three excel:
1. Mondly
Let’s face it: not everyone likes the trial-and-error method of learning. If you want an app that eases you in and even lets you learn from your native tongue, then Mondly is for you.
Mondly is immersive but still gives ample guidance for learners. This app lets you build your Ukrainian vocabulary and learn contextual grammar through daily lessons, fun exercises, and weekly/monthly challenges.
Where Mondly shines though is in its chatbot conversation feature. Here, you can improve your conversational skills and learn natural pronunciations and accents through a native-voiced chatbot. It’s especially helpful for beginners but even advanced learners will find this app handy.

Want to start speaking Ukrainian right away? You can do so with Pimsleur.

Featuring 30 lessons that last 30 minutes each, Pimsleur Ukrainian teaches you not just Ukrainian expressions but also how to say them. This app is great for learning authentic pronunciation and accent because all Ukrainian words are said by native speakers!
What’s more, Pimsleur is known for its effective graduated interval recall method — a well-timed way of teaching new words that help you recall them longer or permanently. This means that by the time you finish the course, you know Ukrainian words and phrases by heart.

When learning Ukrainian, or really, any language, it’s important to not get stuck with one resource. No app or book or course will provide everything you want or need to learn. So, you’ll have to combine resources to cover all the bases.

Duolingo: A great introduction to Ukrainian, Duolingo’s lessons are short, game-like, and absolutely fun. You’ll unlikely reach fluency with this alone but it’ll keep you motivated.
Complete Ukrainian Beginner to Intermediate Course: True to its name, this textbook can take you from beginner to confident speaker with relevant thematic lessons and innovative exercises. Practical and easy to follow, this book is a must-have for Ukrainian learners.
Cudoo: This e-learning platform has a collection of comprehensive, relevant Ukrainian courses featuring effective teaching methods, flexibility, and the option to learn at your own pace. For those who want to learn Ukrainian for business, there’s also a specialized course for that.
Ukrainian Lessons Podcast: Hosted by a real teacher, this well-structured podcast covers everyday topics in short episodes. It released about 200 episodes from 2016 to 2021 so you’ll have plenty to listen to.
Mango Languages: This comprehensive app for learning Ukrainian features various activities that target vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and cultural knowledge. You’ll benefit from loads of native speaker audio that’ll boost your listening and speaking skills.
Glossika: This audio-based app is known for “mass sentence training,” helping you internalize Ukrainian through high-volume repetition. By listening to and shadowing thousands of native-speaker recordings, you’ll naturally absorb syntax and rhythm, building the muscle memory needed to speak with genuine confidence.
LingChat: This app uses AI to help you master Ukrainian through interactive chats and role-plays. It’s like having a patient tutor available 24/7, focusing on real conversation and instant feedback to help you speak naturally and build confidence quickly.
